Benefits for older customers

What benefits are available from the council?

Help with your council tax and rent

Many people entitled to Council Tax Benefit and/or Housing Benefit, including up to 1.7 million pensioners, don't claim it.

We will look at the money you and your partner have coming in, as well as your savings. We will also look at your other circumstances, such as your age and whether anyone else lives with you. If you qualify for Council Tax Benefit and/or Housing Benefit, it will not affect the amount of money you receive in other benefits.

Please note: If your household capital is over £16,000 you will not qualify for Council Tax Benefit or Housing Benefit.

Pension Credit

Pension Credit is worked out by the Pension Service. It provides an entitlement to all pensioners. The Pension Service website provides lots of information that you will find useful, as well as details of how to claim Pension Credit.

You can now apply for Housing Benefit and Council Tax Benefit through the pension service at the same time as applying for Pension Credit. If you are already in receipt of Pension Credit you can apply for Housing Benefit and/or Council Tax Benefit by completing a Housing benefit and Council Tax Benefit application form.
