What should I do if I move from one property or room to another?

Tell us as soon as you move. It is important you let us know quickly, because if we pay you too much benefit, you would have to pay back the overpayment.

When you decide to take on the tenancy you should complete a Change of Address form (PDF) and provide proof of rent (PDF) for your new home.

If you are moving into a privately rented property you may fall under the Local Housing Allowance scheme.

If you have to take your new tenancy before your notice period with your old Landlord expires we may be able to pay benefit for two homes for up to 4 weeks.

To do this we would require:

  • Proof from your old Landlord of the end of your rental liability
  • Proof from your new Landlord that if you had not have taken your new tenancy immediately you would have lost the property.

Normally we will only pay for two homes once you have moved into the new address, but there are some circumstances where we can pay towards your new property for a period before you move in. For example, if you have to take the tenancy straight away, but can not move in yet as the new property is being adapted to meet the needs of someone disabled within your household.
