Nationwide Travel
in 2008
From 1st April 2008, Elderly and eligible
disabled people resident in England, who qualify for a bus
pass, will now get free off-peak nationwide travel, on local
bus services. Off-peak hours are 9.00am until the last bus of
the day Monday to Friday, and all day weekends and bank holidays.
Other areas may vary, but as a minimum the statutory requirement is
9.30am until 11pm Monday to Friday, and at any time of day at
weekends and on public holidays. National free off-peak bus travel
will not cover long distance coach journeys. Local conditions may
apply outside of Thanet.
Do I need to contact you?
If you had a current local bus pass from
Thanet Council, we automatically sent you the new free
nationwide travel pass in April – so if you haven't received
it yet, please phone us on 01843 577310, immediately.
Companion permit – new conditions
If you are medically always unable to travel
alone, and are only able to travel with a companion, a bus permit
to include a companion is available. The permit is valid for up to
12 months, and allows you free off-peak nationwide travel, but your
companion will travel free in and from Thanet only. If you are
unsure about the level of travel your companion will get, please
phone us.
If you no longer need your permit
You can cancel your permit at any time by
returning it to us. The Council has to pay a lot of money for your
bus permit, so if you do not use it or need it any longer you
should return it for cancellation.
