Change of circumstances
What is meant by a change of circumstances?
This could be a change to any thing, or any part of your life
that may affect the Council Tax that you are liable to pay. It may
also affect a relief, exemption or benefit that you are
getting.
What sort of changes do you mean?
Examples of changes that may affect the Council Tax are:
- If you move to a new permanent address.
- If you are getting a single person discount and another adult
moves in.
- If you are a single parent getting a single person discount and
one of your children reaches 18 years old.
- If you are getting a discount disregard and the disregarded
person moves out, or the reason for the discount no longer exists,
such as a student completing their course.
- If you are getting a Disabled Person Allowance and the disabled
person no longer lives with you.
- If your dwelling is exempt and the reason for exemption no
longer exists.
- If your dwelling is empty and the property becomes occupied by
a tenant.
- If you are getting Council Tax Benefit and your income or
capital increases or decreases.
If I think that there has been a change of circumstances, what
do I do?
You must tell us straight away, in writing, what the changes
are, giving full details. Not every change you need to tell us
about is on the above list. If you are in any doubt about any
change, tell us anyway.
In some cases, if you fail to tell us we can take legal action
against you.
What will happen when I tell you about a change?
We will have another look at the situation and, if necessary,
work out your Council Tax charge again. If there is a new charge we
will send you a new Council Tax bill.
You can get advice by contacting the Revenues
office.
