Preparing for an emergency

Although many emergencies happen without warning, there are some situations that can be foreseen. For example, we do sometimes know from forecasts that bad weather is heading our way and we can take sensible precautions to deal with it or if the Environment Agency are aware that flooding in Thanet is a possibility, they will issue flood alerts.

The most important thing to remember in any emergency is to “go in, stay in and tune in” to your local radio station. There may be occasional exceptions to this, for example, if you receive different advice from the emergency services.

To ensure that you can “tune in” to the latest information, it may be worth buying a battery or wind-up radio in case the mains electricity fails. The Council works closely with the local media at all times and will ensure that, in the event of any emergency, we give them information that they can pass on to you. That information will also be available on the Council’s website.

Our local media consists of newspapers and radio and television stations:

Isle of Thanet Gazette / Thanet Times / Adscene
