Oil pollution
If you see an oil spill along the Thanet coastline, either on
one of our beaches or in the sea, please call Thanet District
Council on 01843 577000, giving us the location of the spillage and
an idea of how big the spillage is.
Do not touch the oil or go near it. It could be dangerous if it
gets on your skin.
If you live very close to a beach which has an oil spill on, it
may be a good idea to close your windows, as some oil can produce
fumes. The Council, working closely with the Maritime and
Coastguard Agency, will arrange for people with specialist cleaning
equipment to start clearing up the oil spill as soon as
possible.
We understand that people may want to help out in the event of
an oil spill, particularly if our unique wildlife is threatened,
but it’s important that this work is done by professionals, who are
experienced in dealing with this sort of situation.
