Grants for Business Investment (GBI) is a form of financial assistance for Assisted Areas in the UK and is available in Thanet. It is designed for businesses looking to make a capital investment but who need financial help to go ahead.
GBI grants are available across the whole district to both large corporates and small and medium-sized enterprises (SME’s). Grants are available to new and existing businesses looking to invest in capital equipment, expand and modernise facilities, increase productivity and safeguard and create skilled jobs. Projects can involve capital expenditure on fixed assets such as land or property and plant or machinery.
The amount of support awarded is dependent on the size of business, eligible project expenditure, location of the investment, the quality of the project and its impact on productivity and skills.
European restrictions may apply to certain sectors or where sectors of the UK market are already fully served or where support would simply displace or reduce existing jobs in similar businesses elsewhere.
Grants for Research & Development (R&D) is a Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills (DIUS) scheme and replaces the former DTI’s Smart scheme. It supports SME’s carry out research and development work on technologically innovative products and processes, SEEDA is responsible for delivering Grants for R&D in South East and only SME’s can apply.
The project must involve research and development on technologically innovative products or processes at the pre-production stage.
