Fairtrade
What is Fairtrade?
Fairtrade provides a way for consumers to show their commitment
to a fairer world, and enables producers to satisfy their basic
needs. Fairtrade works by:
- paying fair prices to the producers and enabling
consumers in rich countries to buy their products
- supporting producer organisations in social
development projects, e.g. health and educational provision
- campaigning to highlight the unequal system of
world trade which places profit above basic needs and human
rights
- insisting on acceptable working conditions
- encouraging environmental responsibility
Why is Thanet District Council supporting Fairtrade?
From the start Fairtrade has always had a simple aim: to secure
a better deal for producers in the developing world. However, in
many countries across the world this is not the case. As an
investor in people, Thanet Distirct Council is keen to support
Fairtrade initiatives in the campaign against such injustice.
Who are the Thanet Fairtrade Initiative?
Formed in 2005, Thanet Fairtrade Initiative is a busy group of
individuals dedicated to raising awareness of Fairtrade in Thanet,
and the wider Kent area. Chaired by Tammy Stewart-Jones, the
initiative works with a variety of local groups including schools,
businesses and other voluntary organisations. More information
about the group is available on the Thanet Fairtrade Initiative
website.
