Our Campaign for Fairtrade Island Status

Following the passing of a resolution in support of Fairtrade, Thanet District Council in partnership with Thanet Fairtrade Initiative campaigned for Fairtrade Island status for Thanet in 2008.

What we need to do to secure Fairtrade Island Status

There are currently 250 Fairtrade towns, cities, districts and zones across the UK. In order for Thanet to join them, there are five goals set out by the Fairtrade Foundation that we must satisfy

1. The local Council must pass a resolution supporting Fairtrade, and serve Fairtrade coffee and tea at its meetings and in offices and canteens.

2. A range of products that carry the 'Fairtrade' Mark must be available in local shops and cafes.

3. Fairtrade products must be available in a number of local work places and community organisations such as schools and churches.

4. There must be good media coverage and popular support for the campaign.

5. A local Fairtrade steering group must be convened to work towards achieving Fairtrade status and ensure continued commitment to Fairtrade once it is achieved.

For more information on the Five Goals please see the Fairtrade Foundation website.
