SSCF Workers - March 2008 to March 2010

The SSCF funding programme ended in March 2010.  Details on how the programme was run and the impact it made via the wide range of projects it funded are provided in the SSCF final evaluation report.

SSCF Workers - Funded from March 2008 to March 2010

The SSCF fund awarded in 2008-10 differed from the funding given in previous years in that only revenue funding was available and therefore could not be used to buy or build things. The money was used to fund 13 projects and a range of workers who worked with Cliftonville West and Margate Central residents over a two year period.

Listed below is the team of SSCF workers that the programme funded over this period:

Domestic Abuse Outreach Worker

Oasis Women’s Refuge and Kent Police were funded by SSCF to work with the community to reduce the amount of domestic abuse in the area. This project worked with ‘at risk’ groups and victims to give them confidence to break out of the cycle of abuse.

The Domestic Abuse Outreach Worker focussed on supporting adults and children that suffered from domestic abuse.  The worker offered advice and support in many ways, including helping them to contact other organisations.  The worker offered emotional support and understanding to help victims rebuild their lives and helped families to remain in their homes, or if that was not possible, to move to a place of safety.  Assistance also included practical support on financial, legal and housing issues, for example ensuring the relevant security systems were in place like a panic alarm or new locks on doors and windows.  Contact the National Domestic Violence helpline on 0808 2000247 or the Dove project on 01702 300006 or e-mail community@oasiswomensrefuge.org

Community Co-ordinator for Mencap

East Kent Mencap was funded by SSCF to help build life skills for people with Learning Disabilities (LD) so that they could become independent, as well as support those who were currently living independently in the area.

The funded community co-ordinator worked in partnership with Thanet Citizen’s Advice Bureau to provide advice and information to people with Learning Disabilities who were living in Margate and Cliftonville. Thanet has one of the highest levels of people with LD in Kent and the wards of Cliftonville and Margate was home to some of the most vulnerable.  The worker provided free confidential and impartial advice on employment, debt, benefits, housing and on family issues. Contact East Kent Mencap, New Gateway House, 132 Northdown Road, Cliftonville, Kent CT9 2RB.  Tel: 01843 224482

Youth & Community Workers and Community Cohesion & Development Officer

Through the Kent Refugee & Minority Support Group, the SSCF funded two part-time Youth & Community Officers and a Community Cohesion & Development Officer.

The funded team worked with minority groups to help them to get involved with the local community.  A youth group was set up which met weekly at the Quarterdeck Youth Centre in Cliftonville and workers encouraged the young people to take part in other community events such as the Cliftonville Games, as a way to get people to integrate.

This project also provided free workshops to schools and to other groups and organisations to increase understanding of racism, bullying, immigration, migration and different cultures.

CASE Kent Community Group Advisors

SSCF funded CASE Kent (Community Action South East) to provide 2 part-time advisers who focussed on helping volunteers, community groups and organisations to grow and become more sustainable.  The advisors helped groups to meet national quality standards, which in turn greatly improved their ability to access funds from the public sector and the Lottery.  SSCF also funded an administrator to support the CASE Kent team which was based in Ramsgate.

CASE Kent also provided free places on a wide range of training courses for organisations active in the SSCF area (i.e. in Margate Central and Cliftonville West wards).  This included courses on managing volunteers, basic book-keeping, publicity and marketing and developing a fundraising strategy. Community Development Support Worker (CDSW)

SSCF funded a CDSW for the Cliftonville Partnership to provide support to the businesses and the community in Northdown Road. The worker also provided a link between businesses and the local community and encouraged them to work together for the benefit of the area.  This included organising and supporting local projects and events. St Paul’s Community Centre Welfare Officer

SSCF supported St Paul's Community Centre in its delivery of services to the community through the part-funding of a Welfare Officer and three part-time posts of an administrator, cook and caretaker.

Police Community Support Officer (PCSO)

SSCF part-funded with Kent Police a PCSO based at Hartsdown Technology College who focussed on issues in and around the local school and engaged in proactive work with students and their families to change behaviour that was causing concern.

Advice Worker Migrant Helpline

SSCF supported the work of Migrant Helpline by continuing to fund an advice worker who provided a vital and much used drop-in advice service twice weekly, with the help of a volunteer at St Paul's Community Centre.

Project Engage

SSCF funded Pie Factory Music (PFM) to act on behalf of Project Engage to carry out a mapping and gap analysis of youth provision for young people in the SSCF area (of Cliftonville West and Margate Central).  This work suggested that there was a shortage of workers with specialist skills to support children with disabilities in group activities.  Both parents and carers of children with disabilities were called upon and their advice used to produce a guide which is available to organisations who deliver youth services.  The guides provides advice on how to run events and activities to ensure accessibility for all persons, including those with disabilities.

Parents and young people were also consulted in the design of the Engaging Disabilities website http://www.engagingdisabilities.org.uk/ which aims to make it as easy as possible for young people with disabilities to access provision in the Thanet area. This website has been designed to improve the flow of information between organisations working with young people and their parents /carers.

SmartWater in Cliftonville

SSCF part funded the SmartWater project with Kent Police and Thanet Community Safety Partnership.  SmartWater is a property marking device which was distributed in the SSCF area to act as a deterrent to criminals and to reassure victims of crime.

Waste and Recycling Enforcement Officer

SSCF funded this officer to improve the cleanliness of the area.  The officer used the law to force residents and landlords who refused to deal with their rubbish to clean up. For all issues concerning waste and street cleansing call 01843 577115.
