This factsheet provides basic information on standing as a candidate at the next UK Parliamentary general election in Great Britain.
This guide aims to provide practical advice for anyone who wants to stand as a candidate or be an agent at a UK Parliamentary general election. It covers the whole election process, including the main steps towards standing as a candidate, the campaign and election periods, the declaration of the result and election expenses.
Forms that must be completed and submitted to the Acting Returning Officer to become validly nominated as a candidate.
This checklist is designed to assist candidates standing for election to the UK Parliament in preparing to submit their nomination, and should be read alongside the Electoral Commission's Guidance for candidates and agents.
These documents are produced by the Electoral Commission. It has a primary responsibility for providing advice and assistance on electoral matters to all those involved in elections, including (Acting) Returning Officers, Electoral Registration Officers, electoral administrators, political parties and candidates.
The first point of contact for candidates and agents should be the (Acting) Returning Officer and their election team (details of which can be found under the "contact us" section to the right of this page). Electoral Commission staff will be happy to provide advice on any matter discussed in these guides.
Are you ready for this year's General Election?
While the date for the General Election is not yet known, don't wait until it's announced before you secure your right to vote. Registering to vote only takes a few minutes: print off a form from http://www.aboutmyvote.co.uk/, the website of the independent elections watchdog, the Electoral Commission, or telephone Electoral Services on (01843) 577500.
Sometimes people don't realise they need to re-register every year. Thanet District Council wrote to all households back in September, October and November. If you are not sure you returned your form, or if you have moved house since then and have not re-registered at your new address, then take a few minutes to do so now, and make sure nothing stops you from having your say on election day.
Remember: if you are not registered, you can't vote!
