Electoral Register

The electoral register is a list of the names and addresses of everyone registered to vote in the Thanet District Council area. There are two versions of the electoral register – the full register and the edited register.

The full register is used for elections, preventing and detecting crime and checking applications for credit. The register is on deposit at the Gateway building and is available for inspection under supervision.

The edited register is available for general sale and can be used for any purpose including commercial activities such as marketing.

Your details will appear on the full register but you can choose not to  have your name showing on the edited register.

You cannot vote if your name does not appear on the register.  Please note: you are not automatically registered via other council departments such as council tax.

Electoral registration takes place in the autumn of each year with the register being published on 1 December. A voter registration form is issued to each household for completion and the register is compiled from the information provided on this form. Once the register is published, if you find you are not registered, you have moved, or your name has changed, you can register throughout the year.  This is called Rolling Registration and the register is updated on a monthly basis from December through to August.  During this monthly process, each person must make their own application.

It is important to ensure your registration is up to date so that you can vote once an election is called.  It can also affect your credit rating if your name does not appear on the electoral register.

Why do you need to be on the Electoral Register?

You need to be on the register to be able to vote, you are not automatically registered even if you pay council tax. It can affect your credit rating if you are not registered to vote.
