What type of swimming facilities would you like to see in Thanet in the future?

That’s what Thanet Council is now asking local people and it couldn’t be easier to give your views. 

Pick up a questionnaire:

• Spring 2007 issue of Thanet Matters on page 9
• Council offices in Margate
• local libraries
• public swimming and leisure centres
• fill in Swimming Pool Questionnaire online 

This is an important issue, as the existing Ramsgate Swimming Pool is in urgent need of replacement and the pool at Hartsdown Leisure Centre only has three to four more years of life left in it.

The Council asked for people’s views last year about what should replace the Ramsgate pool and more than 500 questionnaires were completed. Of those, nearly 70% said that they wanted a swimming pool which had both recreational facilities, such as small slides, along with a 25 metre pool and a teaching pool.

These results led to three potential options for the future of swimming in Thanet:

• Option 1 – rebuild or refurbish the existing sites.      Result - closure of Ramsgate Pool for 18 months and  no new leisure facilities.
• Option 2 – rebuild Ramsgate pool next to the Sports Centre and refurbish Hartsdown Leisure Centre.       Result - probably no new leisure facilities, as not enough space at either site.
• Option 3 – a new pool at the Marlowe Academy, with an eight lane 25 metre competition standard pool, a teaching pool and leisure pool, with river rapids, slide and water jets. Result - closure of Ramsgate Swimming Pool and Hartsdown Leisure Centre.

That’s the position the Council has reached and now we need to know what you think.  Fill in a survey to ensure that your views on this issue are heard.
