Housing

Provision will be made for 7,500 new homes in Thanet over the period 2006-2026, in line with regional planning policy (the "South East Plan").

About 20% of these new homes will be accommodated on land at Nash Road and New Haine Road, Westwood. We anticipate that most or all of the remaining 80% will be provided for on previously developed land within the existing built up area of the Thanet Towns. No major housing development is proposed in any of the villages.

To address an oversupply of flats in the district, new homes will be houses or bungalows, unless there are overriding townscape or other reasons. Loss of family homes will be resisted, unless development is compatible with existing residential amenity and character.

Residential developments of 15 or more dwellings will be required to include an element of affordable housing (30%, except in Broadstairs and the rural areas, where 35% will apply).

The number of gypsy and traveller pitches to be accommodated in each district will be established in regional policy. Locations to meet whatever level of provision is set will need to be compatible with surrounding uses and have reasonable access to local facilities and services.
