Local People, Local Places - Crime and Safety for 2010-11

This consultation is now closed.  These pages are provided for information only.

1. Consultation Overview

The 'Local people, local places' survey was carried out as part of Thanet Community Safety Partnership’s (TCSP) annual consultation to help identify local residents’ priorities around crime and safety.  The survey aimed to find out from residents, in every part of Thanet, how safe they feel in their local area, what they feel would help to reduce crime and how much of a problem certain issues are where they live.

The results from the survey were then used to help shape the TCSP Action Plan for 2010-11.

2. When was the consultation carried out?

October to December 2009.

3. Who was consulting

Thanet Community Safety Partnership - Community Services

4. Who was consulted?

This consultation was open to all Thanet residents.

5. How was the consultation carried out?

The consultation was launched as part of a wider information pack called Local People, Local Places.  This pack included details about crime in different parts of Thanet, highlighting how much crime has reduced in recent months and included details of the teams in each area, who are working to make Thanet a safer place to live, work and visit.  The leaflets, posters and business cards covered central Margate, Cliftonville, Dane Valley, Newington, central Ramsgate and Westgate, but views were wanted from people in all areas of the district.

  • Postal surveys were available to complete.  They were issued to individuals upon request or could be collected from a number of public buildings and offices across Thanet (including all Thanet libraries).
  • Surveys were handed out at PACT panel meetings and were direct mailed to a number of key organisations and groups in the area.
  • An online survey was available to complete with a link from the front page of the website.
  • A number of road shows were carried out in partnership with the Police to complete surveys face to face with members of the public in busy public areas, during high footfall times (for example Westwood Cross and Ramsgate town centre on market day). This was specifically to target people who wouldn’t normally participate in postal surveys or wouldn’t normally engage with the council.  A number of Christmas events and activities were also targeted.
  • Surveys were taken to Thanet Youth Council Conference where over 200 12-13 year olds were given the chance to complete the survey.
  • Local press and media also promoted the consultation.

6. What was the outcome?

Thanet Community Safety Partnership received 621 responses from members of the public.
