Shoreline Management Plans
Have your say
Local people can have their say on how coastal erosion and
flooding on the North Kent coastline will be managed over the next
100 years.
Background
Thanet District Council is a member of the South East Coastal
Group, whose other members include Kent County Council, the
Environment Agency and other local authorities. The group developed
two plans, called Shoreline Management Plans, setting out how they
will tackle the problems over the next century, during which time
sea levels are expected to rise as a result of climate change. The
plans will also look at ways to deal with the risks this will pose
to both people and the environment.
The Shoreline Management Plans will cover both the Medway and
Swale Estuaries and the open coastline from the Isle of Grain near
Rochester to South Foreland near Dover. This includes the full
length of Thanet’s coastline from Plumpudding Island (near Minnis
Bay) to Stonelees at Pegwell Bay.
So far, consultation has been held with local authorities, local
councilors and interest groups to produce the plans and now they
are out to public consultation.
