Budget consultation 2009-10

Residents were given an opportunity to have their say on the council's budget for 2009-10.  Find out below what residents' priorities were and how the council used their views to help shape the budget.

You said:

  • Waste collection and cleanliness were your top two priority services
  • Of the council’s non statutory services, you said that economic development and
  • Regeneration was your highest priority and that parks and open spaces and
  • Crematoria and cemeteries were also important.
  • The most popular ways to make savings were for internal re-organisation of staff and
  • sharing services with other councils.
  • Increasing council charges was the least popular way to generate savings.

So we did:

  • £90,000 extra cash/resources into the waste, recycling and cleansing team
  • Agreed not to charge for use of public toilets during 2009/10
  • Started work on sharing services with other councils across East Kent. This is likely to
  • Include putting finance, IT, procurement and human resources, into a shared services
  • Vehicle, operated by Canterbury, Dover, Shepway and Thanet councils. It is hoped
  • That this could produce savings, on its own, of between £2.5 and £3 million
  • Over the next five years.
  • Continued to reduce the senior management structure and froze staff vacancies
  • Reduced use of agency staff and consultants
  • Reduced overtime payments
