e-Government

e-Government (Electronic Government) is part of central and local government’s programme to modernise the way they do business and provide services to the public.

The programme makes use of various forms of computer technology, including the internet, to support working practices. It will involve the establishment of contact centres and One Stop Shops where the majority of customer queries can be dealt with at the first point of contact.

The primary aim of e-Government is to improve the customer’s experience, both of dealing with the Council and its staff, and taking advantage of its services with a secondary aim for the Council to improve its efficiency and therefore customer satisfaction.

All English Councils, including Thanet, have been set a target of 31 December 2005 to radically overhaul the way they deliver and manage their services. Targets have also been set for central government departments.

Individual Council progress is measured using a national performance indicator, known as BVPI 157. This measures the number of customer facing services that can legally and operationally be delivered electronically against the number of services where electronic delivery has been implemented. It is important to stress that all services will continue to be made available via traditional face to face and telephone contact routes. The use of computer technology - including the internet, contact centres, Digital TV, SMS text messaging and kiosks - is intended to widen customer choice in terms of accessing the Council (convenient locations, times etc), rather than decreasing it.

Thanet’s programme is described in its Implementing Electronic Government (IEG) Statement. This is updated annually and submitted to the Office for the Deputy Prime Minister (ODPM) for approval. In the final 15 months of the programme, interim statements were also submitted in July and December 2005.

A final statement (IEG6) showing Thanet's achievements against the targets will be submitted in April 2006.
