Carpet Beetles

Carpet Beetle

Anthrenus verbasci

Carpet beetles in the larval stage are known as Woolly Bears and feed on natural textile fibres such as woollen fabrics, carpets and clothes.  The adults are 2-4mm long, they are dark brown or black and mottled with yellow or white marks on the back.  The larval stage has a characteristic banded appearance, 4-5mm long and covered in short bristles which are irritant to some people.

You can treat infestations yourself with a residual insecticide, but it is very important to follow the manufacturer’s instructions to avoid causing damage to carpets or fabrics.  The Council  offers a one off treatment for carpet for which there is a charge.
