Flood and Coastal Protection

Work on a landmark scheme to protect Margate from flooding in the future has now started.

This scheme has been developed and designed over the last two years to provide protection for Margate, which is at risk from flooding from the sea.

The first phase of work was completed in April 2011 and was carried out from the Harbour Slipway to the Rendezvous.  Construction work for the second and final phase of this scheme began in November 2011, and is due to be completed by December 2012.

The construction work will be carried out in four main sections along the seafront and will include:

  • Strengthening of the Stone Pier
  • Sea wall reconstruction of the South sea wall (Marine Drive)
  • New stepped structure from the beach to the promenade
  • Sea wall reconstruction of the North sea wall (The Parade)

The construction site for the scheme on Marine Drive will be quite large and some local disruption is likely during some parts of the works on site.  However the completed scheme will have a life of at least 50 years and will provide much better flood protection to the properties on Marine Drive and in the Old Town area.  The scheme will also improve the quality and amenity value of the public space on the seafront.
