The Local Plan is a policy document produced by the Council, as local planning authority, setting out what can be built and where, and helps guide decisions on whether or not planning applications can be granted.
The Thanet Local Plan was adopted in June 2006. In June 2009 The Secretary of State issued a Direction 'saving' some 93 policies. From 17th June 2009, the remaining Local Plan policies that have not been 'saved' will expire and be deleted.

The Council is preparing a Core Strategy, which will be the key document in the Local Development Framework. This document will be important for everyone having a stake in the future of Thanet District. When adopted, the Core Strategy will provide the "big picture" as to how Thanet and its parts will change and develop over the period to 2026. The Core Strategy will need to take the tough decisions to guide these changes including where new development should be accommodated.
Previous consultation and research has enabled us to identify the major issues and opportunities facing Thanet and to assess the merits of various strategy options.
