Planning Policy in Thanet
The Local Plan, which sets out policies to 2011, will be the
last one published by Thanet Council. In September 2005
the new Planning and Compulsory Purchase Act 2004 introduced a
complete new system of planning in England and Wales.
The new Act, while retaining a plan led system, abolishes County
Structure Plans, introduces Regional Spatial Strategies (in our
Region this is being called the South East Plan) and replaces Local
Plans with Local Development Frameworks (LDF’s), , made up of a
number of documents which will set out the planning policies for
Thanet through to 2021.
In addition to the Local Development Framework for Thanet, the
Development Plan now includes:
- The
Regional Spatial Strategy (South East Plan)
This is being prepared by the South East England Regional Assembly
(SEERA) and is called the South East Plan. The Plan covers a
wide range of subjects including economic growth and development,
transport and housing. It is an important document, as it will
fundamentally influence decisions about the location of new
development, infrastructure and investment priorities throughout
the Region.
When agreed by the government this plan will determine the number
of new homes in the region for the next 20 years including the
number to be built in Thanet.
Until the South East Plan is adopted,
the Kent and Medway Structure Plan offers appropriate strategic policy
guidance.
Kent County Council have also produced
Minerals and Waste local plans and are in the proces of renewing
these and producing Minerals and Waste Development Frameworks.
