Wheeled bins
Nearly 30,000 homes across Thanet now have wheeled bins and are
able to participate in the recycling scheme. In 2007/08 we
recycled nearly 28%.
During 2008 we aim to add another 10,000 homes to the council’s
recycling scheme to help us achieve the recycling target of 30% for
Thanet.
Background
A bin for all reasons
The Council wants to change and
improve the way it collects your domestic rubbish and recyclable
materials.
One way we can do this is to introduce
a dual wheeled bin service to collect household waste one week and
recyclable materials (paper, cardboard, cans and plastic bottles)
the next. For those residents where a wheeled bin service is
not suitable, we hope to find an alternative.
By doing this we believe we can
increase the recycling rates throughout the district and keep the
streets cleaner with less chance of seagulls attacking refuse and
bags splitting on collection.
The wheeled bin service began in 2006
with a pilot service in selected areas to test it out and identify
any problems before they were rolled out district wide.
Why is the Council introducing wheelie bins?
- Landfill space is running out, we need to reduce the amount of
waste so extending the life of the existing disposal site.
- Households in Thanet produce about 60,000 tonnes of waste each
year.
- In 2004/05 we recycled about 18%, although this is a
great improvement on previous years we still need to increase our
recycling levels. Our target for 2011 is 40%.
- We believe that introducing wheeled bins will improve the
general street scene and reduce the amount of litter on our
streets.
- The increase in recycling will enable us to meet government
targets, if we fail to meet them we may face financial
penalties.
There are various areas included in the wheeled bin
scheme. Please check the
refuse database to see if your road is included.
Households already included on the wheeled bin
scheme should have received a Wheeled bin information
leaflet explaining how to use the bins together
with a calendar of collection dates.
If you would like further information about the wheeled bin
scheme or require a collection calendar, please call the Council’s
Waste and Recycling team 01843 577115.
