Background
A bin for all reasons
The Council wants to change and
improve the way it collects your domestic rubbish and recyclable
materials.
One way we can do this is to introduce
a dual wheeled bin service to collect household waste one week and
recyclable materials (paper, cardboard, cans and plastic bottles)
the next. For those residents where a wheelie bin service is
not suitable an alternative would be provided.
By doing this we believe we can
increase the recycling rates throughout the district and keep the
streets cleaner with less chance of seagulls attacking refuse and
bags splitting on collection.
The wheeled bin service began in 2005
with a pilot service in selected areas to test it out and identify
any problems before they are rolled out district wide.
Why is the Council introducing wheeled bins?
- Landfill space is running out, we need to reduce the amount of
waste so extending the life of the existing disposal site.
- Households in Thanet produce about 60,000 tonnes of waste each
year.
- In 2004/5 we recycled about 18%, although this is a great
improvement on previous years we still need to increase our
recycling levels. Our target for 2011 is 40%.
- We believe that introducing wheeled bins will improve the
general street scene and reduce the amount of litter on our
streets.
- The increase in recycling will enable us to meet government
targets, if we fail to meet them we may face financial
penalties.
