Fines for dropping litter

New laws have come into force, allowing Councils to increase the fines for those caught and local people on the Council’s Community Matters panel were asked whether they wanted Thanet District Council to increase the fine. The response was a definite yes and the fines are now:

Fines can be handed out by the Council’s Environmental Health Officers and our team of Community Safety Wardens, who patrol the area and look out for problems such as abandoned vehicles, graffiti and people dropping litter in the street.

Don’t forget that dropping litter in the street includes cigarette butts and chewing gum. They’re both forms of litter and if you’re caught dropping either of them, you could find yourself facing the prospect of a fine.

Environmental Action Programme

The Environmental Action programme has been developed by Thanet District Council to improve the condition of our busiest areas, starting with our main town centres and roads.  The  EAP (Environmental Action Programme) aims to deal with a wide range of problems and restore pride in our towns.

• Thanet District Council is one of only two Councils in England that spends more money on cleansing than refuse collection, we collect over 5000 tonnes of litter or illegally dumped waste each year.

• £ 2.2 million pounds a year. 280 miles of road / highway, a 28 mile of coastline, 800 litter bins, 300 dog waste bins, 400 adopted alley ways.

• 120 hectares of land, 45 cleaners, 5 mechanical sweeping machines, 1 road washing machine, 3 dumped rubbish removal squads, 128,000 residents and thousands of visitors – It all adds up to a huge cleaning operation.

• The majority of street cleansing is carried out as required. Areas such as town centres and sea fronts, with heavy pedestrian traffic, are cleansed almost continuously.
