Homelessness

At risk of becoming homeless?

If you are homeless or about to become homeless you can apply to us for help in finding a home.

We can also provide advice to help you to avoid losing your home.

If you are living in Thanet and there is a possibility that you  could lose your home in the near future you can get advice from Thanet District Council’s housing options team:

  • You may be having difficulties claiming Housing Benefit on your home.
  • You might have lost your job and are having difficulties paying for your home.
  • You may have family disputes etc.

The housing options team will be able to provide you with appropriate advice and assistance to help you avoid becoming homeless.

Contact us

The first step you should make is to contact us.  Then we can make an appointment for you to come in and discuss the best way to prevent you from becoming homeless.  When we meet you we will explain some of the housing options that are available to you.

We are happy to discuss any housing problems or worries that you have.

Call 01843 577277, or email housing@thanet.gov.uk, and we will do all that we can to help you.

Resolving your housing problems

In some cases we may want to visit you in your home to see if we can work with you to resolve your housing difficulties.  Sometimes we may be able to help you and your household resolve any conflicts you may be having.  This may prevent you or someone who lives with you becoming homeless.

Contact your landlord

If you are living in a privately rented property and are having problems paying your rent, you

should contact your landlord as soon as possible before the situation gets worse.

If you don’t feel happy to do this, we can do it for you.  Often we can work with you and your landlord to reach a satisfactory conclusion for you both.

We can also give you advice on the housing benefits you may be entitled to.

Finding alternative accommodation – Rent Deposit

When you come and speak to one of the team, the rent deposit scheme is an option, which may be discussed.  We will help you look for a suitable property and if you feel happy with it then, in some cases, we can help with a deposit.

This must be paid back on a weekly basis, but we will ensure this is manageable for you.  For more information on the Rent Deposit Scheme please call the Housing Options team on 577277.

Need help finding a place to live?

We try to help provide information to those people who are homeless or about to become homeless.  Please contact the Housing Options team to discuss how best you can find accommodation.
