Certain areas of Cliftonville West and Margate Central were designated as a selective licensing area on Wednesday 12 January 2011. Subject to certain exemptions, every residential premises which is privately let to one or more tenants must be licensed if it is within the designation area. The Proposal to Declare a Selective Licensing Designation document can be viewed here . It includes a map of the area included within the scheme.
Applications can be made via our online service provided by Business Link (see note below). Applicants will need to register with the service and set up an account before an application can be made.
PLEASE NOTE: The application form is a generic form, which is also used for making applications under the mandatory HMO licensing scheme. Therefore, please make your application for a selective licence by clicking on the “Apply online” link on the page titled “Application to licence a house in multiple occupation under Housing Act 2004”. When you get to the application form, it will also be headed up with a reference to a house in multiple occupation (HMO), but please ignore this as the form will allow you to choose a selective licence.
The fee structure for selective licensing is different to that for mandatory HMO licensing. The fee structure is available to view in the proposal document mentioned above, but will also be shown on the Business Link website as you proceed through the online application process.
A landlord or agent accredited under the Kent Landlord Accreditation Scheme (KLAS) is entitled to a discount under selective licensing. An accredited landlord or agent is a person who:
KLAS is operated by the UK Landlord Accreditation Partnership. See Landlord information.
IMPORTANT: If your property is subject to the mandatory HMO licensing scheme, then you must make an application under that scheme. In such circumstances, your property will be excluded from selective licensing.
