Shared Housing Plans

Thanet Council is always looking at ways of providing better and more cost efficient services to our tenants.

Over the last year we have been looking at ways we can work with neighbouring councils in Canterbury, Dover and Shepway to provide better, more cost effective services to all our tenants and leaseholders.

New management company

The proposals are to set up a management company jointly owned by the five councils to run our council housing.  The company would have its own Board made up of tenants, councillors and independent members.

We are working with the tenant forums in all five districts to agree a programme of tenant consultations that will take place over the next six months.  An independent tenants' advisor will be appointed to support tenants and make sure that clear and unbiased information is provided.

How would this affect me?

  • Thanet Council will continue to own your home.
  • You would continue to pay your rent to the council and remain council tenants.
  • There would be no change to your security of tenure or your Right to Buy.
  • The council would continue to decide what improvements are carried out to tenants' homes.
  • The service would be delivered locally by housing officers and surveyors based in Thanet.

Consultation

Tenant representatives will help decide how tenants and leaseholders will be consulted on these proposals.  It is likely that there will be newsletters and events.  Look for more information in the Spring edition of "Your Say" newsletter, out soon.
