The Government’s White Paper, Communities in Control, sets out the Government’s proposals for increasing interest, impact, engagement and participation in the work of Local Government and politics.

Key new policies/proposals include:

• A duty to promote democracy
• £70m Community-builders scheme to help empower local people/communities
• Support for community effort on tackling climate change and local events to address local ‘issues’
• £7.5m Empowerment Fund to support third sector organisations
• A new duty for Councils to respond to petitions
• Support for participatory budgeting
• Support to promote voting in elections/power to provide modest incentives for voting
• Support for more neighbourhood Councils
• Improved visibility for Overview and Scrutiny
• Support for more directly elected Mayors
• Comprehensive Area Assessments to include evaluation of quality of public engagement
• Community Contracts
