Damage to the archway of York Gate,
Broadstairs
In April, the historical archway of
York Gate was struck by a lorry causing structural damage and the
closure of Harbour Street. Scaffolding has been erected to support
the archway until repair work is carried out by Thanet District
Council.
We estimate that it will take between
six to eight weeks for the archway to be repaired and for Harbour
Street to be reopened.
Unfortunately there is no suitable
alternative vehicle access to the harbour area for use by the
general public.
For business or special deliveries to
Harbour Street homes and businesses, it may be possible to arrange
access via the service ramp between Eastern Esplanade and the lower
promenade.
To enquire if access can be arranged
please contact Thanet Council’s Foreshore services on 01843 577274
(during normal office hours).
York Gate a brief history:
In 1538 the first pier and the York
Gate were built in order to aid and protect the shipyard in Harbour
Street. Built by George Culmer and originally called Flint Gate it
was renamed after the grand old Duke of York and extensively
rebuild in 1795 by Lord Henniker.
