New drawings for Thanet College plans
The latest working drawings for Thanet College’s plans to
relocate to the Westwood Business Park have been shown to
councillors.
Members of the Planning Committee were given a preview at last
week’s (Wednesday 16 July) meeting. The council previously gave the
college the go ahead to relocate the college from its existing site
on Ramsgate Road in Broadstairs to the vacant sites at Westwood,
and the college are now working up the detailed plans for the
building.
The matter before the Planning Committee was the request by the
college to allow the building to be located further from the north
boundary of the site at Westwood Road. They also asked for the
height of the building to be reduced from what had previously
agreed to ensure that the design of the building can be
improved.
The college is using a London firm of architects, who have
significant experience of designing school and college buildings.
Members of the Committee were told that the college is working to
ensure that the building both looks good from the outside and is
designed to provide the best learning environment for the
students.
Chairman of the Planning Committee, Cllr. Ken Gregory, said of
the plans: “I know that these are only draft plans at present.
However, they really do show that the college is committed not only
to giving Thanet a top quality education facility, but also to
providing a building that we can all be proud of. The design that
the college showed us last week indicated that the bulk of the
building is to be reduced from that previously agreed and that they
are looking to push the building and parking area further away from
the residential properties in Westwood Road. This is a positive
step forward and I look forward to seeing the final designs when
they come before the committee.”
