Disability sports head to the beach
Disability sports for children and young people are heading to
heading to beaches around Thanet this summer.
The Thanet Disability Sports Project is a three year programme,
funded by Thanet District Council, Sport England, Kent County
Council and the Thanet School Sports Partnership. It aims to
increase the opportunities for disabled people to get involved in
sport.
As part of the programme, a series of sessions of disability
beach sports have been organised during the school holidays for
five to 18 year olds. Sports on offer will include football, giant
games, Frisbee and beach volleyball.
Sessions will be taking place on the following dates at the
following beaches:
Thursday 31 July
Thursday 7 August
Thursday 14 August
Thursday 21 August
Each session will be divided into two parts, with the first hour
between 10am and 11am for five to 15 year olds and the second hour,
from 11am to midday, for those over the age of 16.
Cllr. Jo Gideon, Cabinet Member for Safer Neighbourhoods, Health
and Communities, said: “The council wants to get more disabled
people involved with sports and the school holidays are a perfect
time to do that. We’re using one of the area’s greatest resources,
our beautiful beaches, to put on a wide range of activities for
those with disabilities and we look forward to welcoming people
along to one of the four sessions over the next few weeks.”
