Young people in Thanet who want to master the art of boxing can now take part in free boxing training sessions delivered by Thanet District Council’s Sport 4 NRG programme.
There are now two free training sessions a week on offer to young people aged between 10 and18, the opportunity to master technical boxing techniques, including footwork, jabs, hooks and punches.
Held at the Millmead Hall (previously the Scout Hut), Margate, the two sessions are held on Wednesdays between 5pm and 6pm for 10 and 15 year olds and 6pm and 7pm for 16 and 18 year olds.
As well as the boxing training sessions, many other sports are available for young people in Thanet as part of the Sport 4 NRG programme, including football, athletics, street-dance, basketball and Ten-pin bowling. See www.thanet.gov.uk/sport for more information, dates and times.
Sport 4NRG is a Thanet District Council funded initiative which provides diversionary sporting opportunities for young people aged between 10 – 18 to keep them active, occupied and out of trouble.
The programme’s sporting activities have already seen more than 2000 attendances this year (April 2011 – January 2012).
James Gregory, Sport 4NRG Officer, said: “As well as it being an Olympic sport, Boxing is really popular on the isle right now, with five thriving amateur clubs.
“However, location, lack of transport and cost are barriers that prevent young people from Millmead attending, so we’re taking a satellite boxing club to them. If young people attend who want to take their boxing more seriously, then we will sign post them to local clubs."
