Thanet District Council’s new Chairman will be putting youth at the heart of his work during his year in office.
Cllr. Doug Clark was elected to the post at last night’s (Thursday 19 May) Annual Council meeting. A former Mayor of Margate, Cllr. Clark has been the member for Cliftonville West since May 2003. His political career dates back to the early 1970s, when he was the only Labour member on the Whitstable Urban District Council. A former magistrate for many years, until his retirement, Cllr. Clark is also a former member of the Youth Justice Board for South East England.
A keen supporter of young people, he has previously received two commendations from Kent County Council for his work with youth. And this will be his focus for the forthcoming 12 months. He said: “I’m a mature man now, but youth is our future.”
On his election as Chairman, he said: “It’s quite a surprise and it should be a very interesting and challenging year, because of the political make-up of the council. Essentially, we’re divided by one. Having said that, I’m sure all Chairmen have challenges during their term of office. I’m looking forward to it also being a rewarding year and working to promote Thanet. I’m sure I’ll also greatly enjoy my time in office.”
During his year in office, Cllr. Clark will be accompanied by his partner of more than 20 years, Louise Drelaud.
Cllr. Kay Dark, who represents Northwood and is a former Mayor of Ramsgate, was elected to serve as the council’s Vice Chairman.
