Operation Clean Sweep success in Ramsgate
Rubbish at private properties and planning and housing
violations are amongst the latest issues tackled through Operation
Clean Sweep.
The Thanet District Council led operation moved into Ramsgate
this week for three days (Tuesday 15 – Thursday 17 July) to tackle
anti-social problems in Trove Court and Kennedy House, Newcastle
Hill and surrounding roads. Operation Clean Sweep, which has
already achieved considerable success in Cliftonville West, also
involves officers from Kent Police, Kent Fire and Rescue Service,
Kent Trading Standards and the Border and Immigration Agency
Following the crackdown, six properties will be served with
notices for having rubbish on their premises. Officers also
identified a number of properties that appeared to be operating as
Houses in Multiple Occupation without a licence, which will be
investigated further. Planning enforcement officers will also be
investigating premises which may not have planning permission.
The council’s housing team managed to visit the vast majority of
the flats in both Trove Court and Kennedy House, with residents
identifying a number of issues that had not previously been raised
with the council, such as dumped rubbish in communal areas and
repairs within people’s flats. Council officers also asked some
tenants to clean up their flats, following the visits.
Cllr. Shirley Tomlinson, Cabinet Member for Commercial and
Environmental Services, said: “The latest Operation Clean Sweep
once again proved to be very useful in highlighting a number of
issues that mattered to residents in Ramsgate. Our officers will
now be working to tackle those problems to help improve people’s
lives and the general appearance of the area. Operation Clean Sweep
continues to be an excellent initiative and we’ll be looking at
further areas that we can take it into in the future.”
