Sea Flood Defence Planning Application

Plans have been submitted for flood defence works along Margate Seafront from the Rendezvous site in the east, to the clock tower in the west.

The application is for strengthening the harbour arm, strengthening and raising the sea wall to the south of the harbour arm, with a flood gate at The Parade junction and a stepped wall at the site of the Kings Stairs. These works would improve flood defence protection for residents and property in the Old Town.

The flood defences are required to protect and maintain Margate Main Sands. The strengthening and raising of the sea wall would prevent water from flooding into the Old Town and the stepped wall would disperse the sea water, stopping it from rising above the flood defences.

Details of the application are available on the council's website using UK Planning. There are four different application numbers which relate to this work.

F/TH/11/0220 - sheet piling, concrete cap and resurfacing of Harbour Arm

L/TH/11/0221 - listed building consent for sheet piling, concrete cap, resurfacing of Harbour Arm and injection of cement grout into Harbour Arm

F/TH/11/0248 - erection of stepped revetment, refacing of sea wall, erection of new sea wall and flood wall

C/TH/11/0247 - demolition of part of sea wall

The plans can also be viewed by visiting Thanet's Gateway Plus in Cecil Street, Margate from 9am to 6pm, Monday to Friday, with extended opening until 8pm on Thursdays. Thanet's Gateway Plus is also open from 9am to 5pm on Saturdays.  The deadline for comments to be received is 6 May 2011. Comments should be sent to planning.services@thanet.gov.uk The application will be considered by the council’s Planning Committee in May 2011.

Further details will be announced about the sessions shortly.
