Summer Blast 08
Six weeks of fun as part of Summer Blast 08 kicks off with a
free youth event in Margate next week (Thursday 24 July).
Put together by Engage, the Summer Blast runs throughout the
school holidays, with hundreds of events organised by a range of
different groups, including Thanet District Council’s sports
development team, Hang 10, Pie Factory Music, Pipeline, Thanet
Coast Project, Sport 4 NRG, Joss Bay Surf School and Thanet
LeisureForce.
It all starts with the Summer Blast celebration event at
Hartsdown Park, Margate on Thursday 24 July from 1pm until 8pm,
organised by Engage and Youth Matters. The event is aimed at 11 to
18 year olds and the day is divided into two parts.
The first part runs from 1pm until 5pm and features a wide range
of activities, including a laser dome, mobile recording studio, MC
workshops, inflatable gladiators ring, climbing wall, inflatable
surf simulator, coastal arts and body painting. There will be a
variety of summer sports to try out, such as volleyball, sumo
wrestling, junior crossbows, tug of war and a golf simulator.
Bernie, the mobile youth bus will be there and there’s also the
chance to try out surfing and kayaking in Hartsdown swimming
pool.
Throughout the afternoon, there will be music workshops from
some of the following bands, who will also be showcasing at the
event throughout the afternoon. Bands, including Floors and Walls,
the Third Half and the Otherhood will be present at the park.
The evening event will be a mix of basketball and Panna (2 on 2)
football competitions with DJs playing music alongside it. The
event, in Hartsdown Leisure Centre sports hall, starts at 5pm with
tickets only available through registration and competitions
earlier on in the day.
Engaging Youth Forum member Steve Kreeger said: “Summer Blast is
an amazing opportunity for 11 to 18 year olds in Thanet to find out
what’s on for them this summer, as well as have a go at a huge
range of activities, competitions and win great prizes all day
long. It’s an exciting time to be a young person in Thanet. The
best bit? Its all FREE!”
