Toilets vandalised during demolition
Toilets at Minnis Bay, that are currently being demolished,
because of continued vandalism, have been vandalised even during
the demolition process.
Council contractors have been taking down the toilets on the
promenade, followed repeated vandalism over a number of years and
low levels of usage. On Friday evening (11 July), the toilets had
been removed as far as the back wall, which was then rendered,
securely fenced off and left to dry over the weekend, before work
could continue.
Contractors returned to work on Monday morning (14 July) and
found that huge gorges had been cut into the rendering. This work
will now have to be done for a second time in order to get rid of
the vandalism.
Cllr. Shirley Tomlinson, Cabinet Member for Commercial and
Environmental Services, said: “This is just another sad example of
why the council took the decision to close these toilets ten months
ago. They were subject to continued and appalling vandalism and
anti-social behavior and, combined with relatively low levels of
use, the council just couldn’t continue paying to repair them to
keep them open. It’s a great shame to close anything, but our
priority must be to provide value for money for our taxpayers and
sadly, these toilets were no longer providing that.”
A push down tap is being installed in place of the toilets to
give chalet holders access to water and other toilets are located
just a few hundred metres away.
