Viking Coastal Art
Families can learn more about the Vikings around the Thanet
coastline during two day art courses, being held next month.
(August).
The Thanet Coast Project and Kent Adult Education have joined
forces for the free programme, which includes a trip to Pegwell Bay
to study and record the Hugin Viking Ship and the beach below,
using a range of creative media.
The courses will also see families spending time in Margate’s
Adult Education Centre to turn inspired Viking ideas into works of
art with the help of artists Ruth Cutler and Trish Harrison.
There will be two courses, one on Friday 8 and Friday 15 August
and another on Friday 22 and Friday 29 August. On each day, the
course will run from 10am until 3pm. Attendees will ideally need to
attend both days of the course.
Thanet Coast Project Education Officer, Naomi Biggs, said:
“These art courses are being used to formulate ideas and designs
from the local community, which we hope will later be incorporated
into a new playground planned for Cliftonville West. The children’s
playground is to be sited on the clifftop above Newgate Gap and
will have a Viking ship as its central feature. The Margate Renewal
Partnership, who are leading the project, want to get local people
involved in developing ideas for the playground and they’ve linked
up with the Thanet Coast Project and Kent Adult Education to get
some Viking inspired creations!”
The course is part of Kent Adult Education’s ‘family learning
programme’ so all adults must be accompanied by at least one child.
