More bins to be wheeled out
Another 8,000 homes, which will be joining the council’s wheeled
bin scheme in the autumn, are getting leaflets explaining how it
works.
More than 30,000 homes around Thanet are already on the scheme,
with each house getting two wheeled bins. One has a blue lid for
recycling, which includes plastic bottles, tins, cans, paper,
cardboard and tin foil, and the other bin has a black lid for
household waste which cannot be recycled, such as food waste and
nappies.
The leaflets ask people whether or not they want smaller or
larger bins and requests must be submitted to Thanet District
Council within two weeks of receiving their leaflet. People can
order larger recycling bins, regardless of how many people live in
the property, but if anyone wants larger black lidded waste bins,
then there must be five or more people permanently living in the
property or a specific medical reason for the request.
Cllr. Shirley Tomlinson, Cabinet Member for Commercial and
Environmental Services, said: “This is the latest part of our drive
to increase recycling and help keep our area clean. Where wheeled
bins have already been introduced, they’ve made a huge difference
to improving the appearance of the streets, with a lot less litter
around, as seagulls can no longer rip open black bags. The scheme
allows people to play their part in recycling and a lot of people
have been surprised by how much they have been able to put into
their blue lidded bin. We’re intending to roll this out to all the
properties that are suitable for wheeled bins, but obviously some
will remain on bags.”
Orders for special sized bins can be made by calling 01843
