What proportion of Thanet people are unemployed?
How is the unemployment level worked out?
Official figures such as the
official labour market statistics (NOMIS) are based on the idea of
a ‘working age’. For most figures the age bracket 16-64 has
been used to measure this, but changes to retirement age make
this an estimate rather than exact number for
'working-age'.
The government publishes figures
for the number of ‘working age’ people who have a job or are
registered for Jobseekers Allowance (JSA). These are called
‘economically active’. It doesn’t include everyone who is in
the 16-64 age bracket as some people never register as unemployed
(e.g. many students), or suffer long-term sickness.
The unemployment level is worked
out by calculating the proportion of economically active people of
working age who don’t have jobs.
What proportion of Thanet people are unemployed?
The official labour market
statistics site (NOMIS) showed that Thanet unemployment in
March 2012 averaged 12.2%. The level is the highest of all
districts in the South-East region. This is how the figures compare
across Kent...
