The council has recently published its draft Statement of Accounts for 2014-15. This statement is published annually and identifies the areas of council spend over the past 12 months. This statement will be formally approved September 2015.
As part of this latest statement the council set up a provision for compensation to live animal exporters following a temporary ban preventing live animal exports from the Port of Ramsgate in 2012.
A High Court decision in February 2013 confirmed that Thanet District Council did not have the power to impose this temporary ban and as part of the ruling, confirmed that the council was liable to pay compensation to the exporters to cover the loss of income incurred as a result of the six-week ban.
In last year’s accounts, which have been open for public inspection, £2.3 million was spent on compensation on this matter.
