Inaugural Thanet Tourism Volunteer Forum

The first ever Thanet Tourism Volunteer Forum was held at Margate Museum on Wednesday 3 May, 2017.

The forum was organised by the Thanet Volunteer Bureau and is funded by Thanet District Council’s Coastal Communities (CCF) funded project 'Discover Thanet’s Coast'.

The aim of the forum is to bring together tourism businesses that use volunteers and ensure they have a dedicated forum to share knowledge, skills and joint working opportunities.

The forum was developed following feedback from delegates attending Volunteer Management training (also funded by the CCF project) that getting together and sharing best practice and skills would be beneficial.

A wide range of tourism businesses attended including Margate Museum, Thanet Coastal Wardens, Drapers Windmill, Monkton Nature Reserve, Margate Town Team, Ramsgate Visitor Information Centre, Margate Civic Society, and Tudor House.

Ian Dickie, Margate Museum and Tudor House Co-ordinator said:

“We have all worked in the dark for so long, it's great at a forum like this where we come into the light and all work together. It’s so important to network and share our knowledge and skills.”

Julie Perrin, Coastal Warden from the Thanet Coast Project added:

“It was very useful to network and think of ways we can work together in the future to support volunteering. Hearing about other people’s experiences and skills and how we can use them was really useful. The enthusiasm in the room to grow tourism was great and we have ideas from this to help look at what we do as volunteers to make some of the Thanet Coast Project events more sustainable.”

Guest speaker at the inaugural Forum was Carly Whybourn, Volunteer Development Co-ordinator for the Kent Wildlife Trust who gave a presentation on managing volunteers. The afternoon also included a Q&A with Carly Whybourn; Kerry Smith and Rosin Murray from Thanet Volunteer Bureau and Lisa Powell, Visitor Services Officer at Thanet District Council.

Following the forum, attendees were able to network, browse resources tables and enjoy a tour of Margate Museum.
