The new regulations come into force on 6 April 2016. The regulations require that all dogs must be microchipped.

Responsibility of the dog owner

  • Have their dog microchipped and registered on one of the authorised commercial databases
  • Keep their contact details up-to-date on the databases
  • Where a dog is transferred to a new keeper, the new keeper, must, unless the previous keeper has already done so, record their details and any change In the dog’s name with the database on which the dog’s details are recorded.

If a dog is identified by an authorised officer (dog warden) as not having an up to date microchip the owner can be issued with a notice requiring the dog is microchipped within 21 days. Failure to do so could incur a fine of up to £500.
