Thanet Skatepark Project

This page is dedicated to the Thanet Skatepark Project including latest updates, designs, images of the construction and schedule of activities planned.

Latest Update - 15th October 2014

Contracts have now been signed and we are pleased to announce that national skatepark contractor Wheelscape will be building the two parks in Broadstairs and Ramsgate.

Work will get underway immediately on both parks with a scheduled completion before Christmas, weather permitting.

PLEASE NOTE - both sites will be fenced off with immediate effect. Please keep out of the sites at all times for your health and safety and to avoid further delays in the construction process.

Project Summary

  • Petition of 1247 signatures delivered to TDC – July 2012 asking for improved skate facilities.
  • Cabinet agree £150k to be spent on three parks – one in Margate, Broadstairs and Ramsgate.
  • Work undertaken by officers to look at sites in each of the towns and to look for more external funding.
  • Locations chosen on a range of reasons due to existing facilities, good access, near to areas with high young person population and sites considerate of surrounding residents. Three chosen were Hartsdown Park Margate, Memorial Recreation Ground, Broadstairs and Warre Rec, Ramsgate.
  • Additional funding received from Broadstairs KCC member grants to boost facilities on the Broadstairs site.
  • 1st set of user meetings held September 2012 with attendance from UK Skate Association chairman Nic Powley as advisor to TDC. Meetings well attended.
  • Meetings used to come up with a specification to allow companies to design parks on.
  • March 2013 – project tender released asking for interested companies to design and build the skateparks.
  • April 2013 – shortlisting undertaken of 11 companies that expressed an interest
  • 5 companies asked to progress to the next stage of full design with deadline of June 2013 for submissions.
  • September 2013 - Three companies submitted designs for all skateparks. 2 companies withdrew at this stage.
  • Further discussion with local residents suggested minor changes to the locations in Broadstairs and Margate. Additional funding allocated by TDC to allow this to happen.
  • Margate skatepark put on hold to ensure correct designs and location achieved. In order to not hold up the other two parks, Margate was taken out of tender and will be re-started following the construction of the other two.
  • April 2014 - final user meeting held to vote for their favourite set of designs for the two parks. These were added to the other project criteria to allow a decision to be made on the preferred contractor.
  • Views of the users and ROSPA used to amend designs ready for signing contracts.
