If you suspect that fraud has been committed in relation to a council tenancy, please report it via our online form.
Report Tenancy Fraud
Reports are confidential and you can choose not to share your personal details.
Thanet District Council can only investigate council tenancies. We cannot investigate private sector tenants. If you think benefit fraud is being committed at a private residence, please report this via gov.uk/report-benefit-fraud.
We work with a third party which investigates cases of suspected tenancy fraud on our behalf. In 2024/25, our Housing Officers referred ten cases of suspected tenancy fraud. This was where there was suspected subletting or non-occupation. In total, we received 63 reports of potential tenancy fraud in 2024/25. We reviewed all the cases and referred 16 for formal investigation.
Tenancy fraud is notoriously difficult to prove. It relies on gathering robust evidence, which can take time and may not always lead to enforcement action. Of the 16 cases investigated this year, one was substantiated and resulted in action being taken. Preventing and tackling tenancy fraud remains a priority. It protects valuable social housing for those who need it most.
