Community-led youth zone unveiled in Dane Valley, Margate
Thanet District Council has installed a brand new, state-of-the-art Multi-Use Games Arena (MUGA) in Dane Valley, Margate.
Funded by the government’s UK Shared Prosperity Fund, the innovative facility marks a major milestone for community-led youth spaces in Thanet. Designed by Margate-based street football organisation, Yo! Street Zone, in close partnership with young people living in Dane Valley, the MUGA meets the specific needs of local people.
Key features of the new games arena include:
- Bespoke ‘panna’ football goals, designed for fast-paced, high-skill street football.
- High-visibility and durable basketball backboards, engineered to withstand the elements and heavy use.
- Calisthenics exercise stations, supporting varied fitness styles and bodyweight training.
- Picnic tables, creating a community hub where young people and families can gather together and socialise.
The MUGA also features low-level fencing, a specific design choice championed by local young women. They highlighted that lower fences make the area more inclusive and welcoming than traditional designs.
The MUGA is now open for use, and was officially launched at an event on Thursday 30 July 2026. The games arena was installed by industry specialists Play Innovation.
Cllr Steve Albon, Cabinet Member for Cleansing and Coastal Services at Thanet District Council commented: “I am thrilled with the new MUGA and what it offers local people who want to get outside and get active. It shows just what can be achieved when we listen to our community.
“By involving young people in the design process, a powerful sense of ownership has been created. They will play an active role in helping to keep the MUGA safe and clean for everyone to enjoy for many years to come.
“I strongly encourage residents of all ages to visit, get active, and make the most of this fantastic new asset right on their doorstep.”
Further details about the project and sports facilities across the district are available on the website.
