Business continuity advice
Under the Civil Contingencies Act 2004, local councils must provide free, general advice and support on business continuity to local businesses and voluntary organisations.
Any incident, large or small, can cause major disruption to your organisation. However, by planning ahead, you can get back to day-to-day business much quicker.
This is called Business Continuity Planning (BCP). Its purpose is to help you prepare strategies to handle disruptions, protect your staff, and keep your most important activities running. By understanding your daily risks, you can spot potential problems early and stop them from turning into major crises.

It is vital to plan for the unexpected. In a crisis, you will have to make tough, rapid decisions under pressure, such as:
- Your staff: What do you do with them if your workplace is inaccessible?
- Your customers: How do you tell the community or your clients that you cannot provide “business as usual”?
- Your deadlines: How will you meet important commitments?
Without a formal plan, you will have to make things up as you go, which makes handling a crisis much more difficult.
