If you are a residential tenant of Thanet District Council you’ll need our permission before you install an EV (electric vehicle ) charging point. We want to help you to make your home sustainable and will grant permission wherever we can. But please read the following guidance first.

We won’t grant permission if you don’t have a private driveway. Shared parking spaces makes the installation and monitoring of EV chargers more complex. This is not something we can support at the moment.
PermalinkYou will need to pay for the installation yourself. We are not able to recommend either products or installers. You should choose a reputable device and installer to carry out the work. Any damage to brickwork, plasterwork etc. will be your responsibility to correct.
PermalinkWe recommend that you have home contents insurance. Let your insurer know you are installing an EV charger.
Our buildings insurance will cover damage to the structure of the building caused by your EV charger. But it will not cover possessions or the repair orreplacement of the charger itself.
The EV charger installation must be done by an electrician who is registered with NICEIC. Their registration confirms they are accredited under Part P of the Building Regulations.
The installer must give you an Electrical Installation Certificate (EIC).
PermalinkIf you are advised that your fuse box (consumer unit) is not compliant and needs replacing we will arrange the replacement at no cost to you. If an upgrade is needed because of the extra power needed, you will need to pay for it. We will do the work, using our specialist electrical contractor. We will then charge you for the work.
You must allow us to carry out any upgrade before you arrange for your installation.
Be sure to tell us about this in your application for an alteration form.
PermalinkYour installer will advise you on the best position for the charge point.
A junction box may be needed for an extra outgoing circuit for the EV charger. We will allow the installation of a junction box, as long as it meets current safety standards.
Cables can be a serious trip hazard. They must never be left trailing across footpaths and pavements.
