Recycling fallen leaves

Thank you for your interest in this year’s leaf recycling scheme. All 400 collection bins have now been allocated.

Unfortunately, we’re unable to accept any new requests.

If you have missed out on a leaf recycling bin this year, you can still dispose of fallen leaves by:

  • Using your standard garden waste bin, if you have a current subscription.
  • Composting at home, which provides excellent nutrient-rich leaf mould for your garden.
  • Visiting a Household Waste Recycling Centre to drop off your garden waste.

If you have already registered and received a bin, your collections will happen as planned.

Please leave your container out on your designated collection day:

  • Tuesdays – CT7, CT8 and CT9
  • Thursdays – CT10, CT11 and CT12

The scheme is simple: we provide the bin, you fill it with leaves, and we collect it for composting.

  1. Request a bin: if you’re keen to take part, complete the online form on this page to request a dedicated wheeled bin for leaf collection.
  2. Fill it up: use the bin exclusively for fallen leaves from your area.
  3. Leave your bin out for collection on your set day.

You can also request to have your bin removed if you no longer wish to use the service, or unsubscribe from our mailing list.

The leaves collected are transformed into high-quality compost, diverting valuable organic waste from disposal and supporting the health of our local environment.

There are bins of different sizes available for residents, schools, community gardens and businesses.

The scheme reopened on Wednesday 7 October 2026.

Before we started this scheme in 2024, all fallen leaves were collected with general street litter, meaning they couldn’t be composted.

Last year, we diverted eight tonnes of leaves for composting. We had 237 participants for the scheme, this year we aim to push that even further, extending the leafing scheme into schools, as well as increasing the number of containers available to residents.

We’re incredibly grateful for the dedication of Thanet’s strong community of litter pickers. By collecting leaves separately, this scheme reduces the volume of wet, heavy organic material our volunteer groups and cleansing teams encounter, making their valued work easier and more effective.

As an extra thank you for helping us recycle more garden waste, we’re holding a prize draw.

Everyone that receives a bin will be automatically entered into the competition.

At the end of the scheme, one lucky participant will win a free year-long garden waste subscription worth £117. This will start in April 2027.

Please read the prize draw terms and conditions for more information.
